　　Its a fine sunny day in the forest, and a rabbit is sitting outside his burrow, tippy-tapping on his typewriter. Along comes a fox, out for a walk.

　　Fox: "What are you working on?"

　　One day, while playing the lute indoors, Gong Mingyi saw a cow eating grass leisurely outside the window. He had a sudden whim to play some melodies for the cow. He first played the "Exercise of Qing Jiao", but the cow still kept on eating grass with head lowered. He seemed to realize that the melody was too highbrow for the cow to understand.

　　有一天，他在室內彈琴，看見一頭牛在窗外悠閑地吃著草。他忽然想彈幾曲給牛聽聽。他先彈了一曲“清角之操”。可是，牛還是跟剛才一樣，只顧低著頭吃草。他似乎意識到，這支曲子太高雅了，牛沒有聽懂。

　　So he played several other melodies, imitating the buzzing sounds of swarms of flying mosquitoes, and the bleats of a calf looking for its companions. At this, to his surprise, the cow stopped eating grass, but raised its head, pricked up its ears, wagged its tail and, pacing up and down in small steps, began to listen attentively.

　　于是，他彈了另外幾支曲子，模擬蚊子成群結隊飛來飛去的嗡嗡聲;模擬小牛犢尋找伙伴的眸眸叫喚聲。這樣一來，這頭牛竟然不吃草了，抬起頭，豎著耳朵，甩著尾巴，邁著小步，留心地傾聽起來。

　　后來居上

　　Ji Anlived at the time of Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D.24). He was respected for being upright and just and for daring to speak the truth. He did not bother about amall matters in personal behaviour and in being an official. He was particular about actual effects and ,although he did not cause a stir ,he could keep the prefecture he governed in perfect order. Because of this. the imperial court transferred him to the central government from being the perfect of the Donghai Prefecture to being a commander in charge of the appointment and dismissal of the local officals.

　　汲黯是西漢武帝時代人，以剛直正義、敢講真話而受人尊重。他為人和做官都不拘小節，講求實效。雖然表面上不那么轟轟烈烈，卻能把一個郡治理得井井有條，因此，朝廷把他從東海太守調到朝廷當主爵都尉——一種主管地方吏任免的官職。

　　Once,Emperor Wudi said that he would implement the policy of benevolence and justice of Confucianism and would do good turns to the people.Emperor Wudi Had hardly finished his remards when Ji An said that there was no need for the emperor to say so.Why should the emperor bother,Ji An said, about pretending to implement the policy of benevolence and justice since he was so greedy and avaricious within himself? This choked the emperor off. The emperor suddenly Changed his countenance and declared the meeting over. All the civilian and military officers at court were breathless with anxiety for fear that Ji An might bring disaster upon himself because of this. After returning, Emperor Wudi said to the people around him that Ji An was a little too rude and too straightforward.

　　有一次，漢武帝說要實行儒家的仁義之政，為老百姓辦好事了。沒等皇帝把話說完，汲黯就說：“陛下內心里那么貪婪多欲，表面上卻要裝得實行仁政，這是何苦呢？”一句話把皇帝噎了回去。漢武帝登時臉色大變，宣布罷朝，滿朝文武都為汲黯捏著一把汗，擔心他會因此招來大禍。武帝回到宮里以后，對身邊的人說，汲黯這個人也未免太粗太直了。

　　For this reason ,Ji An was never promoted again. When he was the commander in charge of the appointment and dismissal of the local officials, both Gongsun Hong and Zhang Tang were low -ranking lfficials of little importance. Later ,they were promoted continuously. Gongsun Hong became the prime minister and Zhang Tang became the imperial censor. However, JiAns post remained thesame. One day, Ji An said to Emperor Wudi that the way the emperor used his ministers was just like piling up firewood, which meant that the latecomers surpassed the old-timers. Of course, Emperor Wudi could see that Ji An was complaining. So,turning to his ministers, Emperor Wudi said, "It is true that no one can stop learning.You see, Ji An is making more and more indiscreet remarks."

　　從此以后，汲黯的官職再也沒有提升。他當主爵都尉的時候，公孫弘、張湯都還是不起眼的小官，后來，他們一個勁兒住上升，公孫弘當上了丞相，張湯做上了御史大夫，可他汲黯還蹲在原地沒動窩。有一天，汲黯對武帝說，陛下使用群臣，跟碼劈柴一樣，是“后來者居上”啊！漢武帝當然聽得出這是發牢騷。于是，轉臉對臣下們說：“人真是不能不學習啊！你們聽汲黯說話，越來越離譜了！”

　　This story comes from The Historical Records. Later generations use the set phrase "the latecomers surpass the old-timers " to indicate that successors can cxcel the predecessors, which is quite different from the original idea when Ji An said that the latecomers surpassed the old-timers.

　　故事出自《史記·汲鄭列傳》。成語“后來居上”，往往指后起的`可以勝過先前的。和汲黯說這話的原意，大不相同。

　　指鹿為馬

　　In Qin dynasty, there was a powerful and evil counselor named Zhao Gao。

　　在秦朝，有個很得勢的奸臣叫趙高。

　　Zhao Gao wanted to rebel, but he didnt know how many people in the court would stand by his side。

　　趙高想造反，但是又不知道群臣中有多少人會支持他。

　　So he worked out a way to test the people。

　　于是他想了個辦法來測試。

　　He presented a deer as a tribute to the emperor in front of the court, and said that it was a swift horse。

　　他在群臣面前送了一頭鹿給皇上，并說這是一匹千里馬。

　　The emperor not accepting his statement said, "This is obviously a deer."

　　皇上不信，說“這明明是鹿啊。”

　　Then, Zhao Gao took this opportunity to ask the court, "Is this a deer or a horse?"

　　然后趙高借機問各位大臣，“這是鹿還是馬?”

　　In the court, those who didnt dare to go against Zhao Gao agreed with him and said that it was a horse, those who dared to go against Zhao Gao said that it was a deer。

　　在大臣中，不敢反抗趙高的`都贊同說是馬，敢于反對趙高的說是鹿。

　　Later, Zhao Gao remembered the counselors who didnt agree with him and persecuted them to solidify his power。

　　后來，趙高記住了這些反對他的人并加以迫害，以鞏固自己的勢力。

　　This story is still popular even today. People use this idiom to describe someone who calls white black。

　　天衣無縫

　　買犢還珠

　　In the past, a man of the State of Chu intended to go to the State of Zheng to sell pearls.

　　從前，有個楚國人準備到鄭國賣珍珠。

　　First he used rare lily magnolia to make a small exquisite case which he fumigated with the delicate fragrance of osmanthuses and Chinese prickly ashes. Furthermore, the case was inlaid with emerald-green jadeite, and adorned with attractive rosy jade. The whole case was decorated in an extremely exquisite way.

　　他先用名貴的木蘭做了一只精巧的小匣子，又用幽香的牡桂和花椒把匣子熏了一下，并且在匣子上面鑲了碧綠的翡翠，還嵌上引人注目的玫瑰石，整個匣子裝演得十分考究。

　　A man of the State of Zheng saw this exquisite case and liked it very much. He bought it with a great deal of money, but he returned the pearl in the case to the man of Chu.

　　有個鄭國人看到這只精美的匣子，非常喜歡，就用重金買了下來。但是，他卻把匣子里的珍珠退還給了那個楚國人。

　　Later, people ridiculed the man of Chu by saying that he was good at selling cases, but not good at selling pearls.

　　后來，人們都嘲笑這個楚國人，說他很善于賣匣子，卻不善于賣珍珠。

　　To go too far in the pursuit of form just like letting a presumptuous guest usurp the hosts role, which brings about opposite results.

　　過分追求形式，反而會喧賓奪主，效果適得其反。

　　子罕拒玉

　　A farmer in the state of Song once got a piece of stone with jade init.

　　宋國人有個農夫得到一塊含寶玉的石頭后，將它獻給了相國子罕。

　　He presented this stone to Prime Minister Zi Han. But Zi Han refused toaccept it. The farmer explained, “It looks like just a stone, butthere is jade inside. It actually is a piece of treasure and suitable forhonorable men like you, not for us common people.”

　　子罕拒絕接受這塊石頭，農夫解釋說：“表面上它是塊石頭，但里面含有寶玉，是個寶物，適合您這樣的貴人使用，我們普通百姓用它就不合適了。”

　　“I know there is jade inside,” Zi Han said,” but I disagree with you. I think to have the virtue of declining things that do not belongto oneself is the real treasure. ”

　　子罕說：“我知道里面是寶玉。但我的觀點和你不同，我認為具有不接受不應得的東西的`品德才是真正的寶玉。”

　　南轅北轍

　　Once a man wanted to go to the south, but his carriage was heading north. A passer-by asked him: “If you are going to the south, why is your chariot heading north? ” The man answered, “My horse is good at running, my driver is highly skilled at driving a carriage, and I have enough money. ” The man didnt consider that the direction might be wrong; the better his conditions were, the further he was away from his destination.

　　從前有個人要到南方去，他坐的車子卻向北方行駛。過路人說：“你去南方，車子怎么向北行駛呢？”他回答說：“我的馬很能跑路，我的車夫駕車的技術也很高明，加上我又帶了充足的路費。”這個人沒有考慮到，方向弄反了，他的條件越好，離他要去的地方就越遠。

　　The idiom derived from this story indicates that ones action was the opposite effect to ones intention.

　　后來人們就把這個故事概括為“南轅北轍”，比喻一個人的行為和他的目的正好相反。

　　臥薪嘗膽

　　During the Spring and Autumn period （770－476BC）, the State of Wu launched an attack against the State of Yue. The King of Wu was seriously wounded and soon died. His son Fu Chai became the new King. Fu was determined to get revenge. He drilled his army rigidly until it was a perfect fighting force. Three years later, he led his army against the State of Yue and caught its king Gou Jian. Fu took him to the State of Wu.

　　春秋時期，吳國和越國之間進行了一場戰爭，吳王不幸受了重傷，不久就死了。他的兒子夫差作了吳國的新國王，他發誓要替父親報仇。于是，他嚴格的操練他的士兵，把他們訓練成了一支非常厲害的軍隊。三年以后，他對越國發動了戰爭，抓住了越王勾踐，把他帶回了吳國。

　　In order to avenge his fathers death, Fu let him live in a shabby stone house by his fathers tomb and ordered him to raise horses for him. Gou pretended to be loyal to Fu but he never forgot his humiliation. Many years later, he was set free. Gou secretly accumulated a military force after he went back to his own state. In order to make himself tougher he slept on firewood and ate a gall-bladder before having dinner and going to bed every night. At the same time he administered his state carefully, developing agriculture and educating the people. After a few years, his country became strong. Then Gou seized a favorable opportunity to wipe out the State of Wu.

　　為了復仇，夫差讓勾踐住在他父親墓旁的破石屋里天天看墓、喂馬。勾踐表面上服從，心里面卻想著復仇。幾年以后，勾踐被放回越國。他立刻開始秘密聚集一支軍隊。為了提醒自己不要忘了報仇，他睡在柴上，還每天在吃飯睡覺前嘗一嘗苦膽。同時，他專心治理國家，大力發展農業，加強民眾教育。幾年后，越國又變得強大起來，然后，勾踐抓住一個適當的`機會消滅了吳國。

　　Later, people use it to describe one who endures self-imposed hardships to strengthen ones resolve to realize ones ambition.

　　后來，人們用它來形容人刻苦自勵以達到自己定下的目標。

　　毛遂自薦

　　In the Warring States Period, the State of Qin besieged the capital of the State of Zhao. Duke Pingyuan of Zhao planned to ask the ruler of the State of Chu personally for assistance. He wanted to select a capable man to go with him. A man called Mao Sui volunteered. When the negoti-actions between the two states were stalled because the ruler of Chu hesitated to send troops, Mao Sui approached him, brandishing a sword. At that, the ruler of Chu agreed to help Zhao, against Qin.

　　戰國時代，秦國軍隊攻打趙國的都城。趙國的平原君打算親自到楚國去請救兵，想挑選一個精明能干的人一同前去。有一個名叫毛遂的人，自告奮勇愿意同去。平原君到楚國后，與楚王談了半天，沒有一點結果。毛遂怒氣沖沖地拿著寶劍，逼近楚王，終于迫使楚王答應出兵，與趙國聯合共同抵抗秦國。

　　This idiom means to recommend oneself.

　　“毛遂自薦”這個成語用來比喻自己推薦自己，不必別人介紹。

　　驚弓之鳥

　　In the Warring States Period, there was a man in the State of Wei called Geng Lei. One day he said to the king: I can shoot down birds by simply plucking my bowstring. When the king expressed doubt, Geng Lei pointed his bow at a wild goose flying in the sky, twanged the bowstring, and the goose fell to the ground. Geng Lei said, This goose has been hurt in the past. Hearing the twang of the bowstring, it assumed that it was doomed. So it simply gave up trying to live.

　　戰國時期（公元前403―221年中國中原地區各諸侯國連年爭戰的時代）魏國有個名叫更羸的人。一天，他對國王說：“我只要拉開弓，空射一下，就能把天上的鳥射下來。”國王不相信。更羸便對準天上飛來的一只雁射去，果真那只雁聽到拉弦的聲音就掉了下來。國王感到很奇怪。更羸說，“那是一只受過傷的`雁。它一聽到我拉開弓弦的聲響，就驚慌得支持不住，自然要掉下來了。”

　　This idiom means that if one has been frightened in the past ones will may become paralysed in a similar situation.

　　葉公好龍

　　There is a young man, Lord Ye. He likes dragons vey much. He draws many dragons in his house. The house becomes a world of dragon.
