In the modern era, there is aheated debate regarding whether theuniversitys library should be open to the public. Some believe thatit will do us more good than harm, while others argue that it wilpose a threat to the order and operation of the university. In myview, the university authorities shouldbe cautious about offeringthe outsiders an access to such an important venue,

Above all,the library, serving as a critical academic facility as well asan indispensable researchsite for both students and teachers, issupposed to keep those limited valuable resourcesto its authorizedusers. If the university choosesto open the library to the public,it ishighly possible that a mass of people will rush into this place, leavingmany college students and teachersunable to complete their aca-demic work.Furthermore, when too many citizens crowd into thelibrary, there will be unnecessary talking, laughing, quarreling oreven chasing, incurring disorder of one kind oranother.

In conclusion, the merits of such a practice outweigh the demerits. Therefore, opening the universitys library tothe public must neverbe put on the universitys agenda.

Directions: Lets say your university is soliciting opinions from students on whether university dining halls should be open to the public. You will have 30 minutes for the task. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

In the modern era, there is a heated debate regarding whether the universitys canteens should be open to the public. Some believe that it will do us more good than harm, while others argue that it will pose a threat to the order and operation of the university. In my view, the university should recognize that this has both pros and cons.Lets start with the advantages. First, it allows the public to enjoy the diverse and delicious food offered by university canteens. This can enhance the reputation of the university and foster a stronger relationship between the university and the local community. Second, it can also generate additional revenue for the university, which can be used to improve the facilities and services provided to students . However, there are also potential drawbacks to consider. For in-stance, the increased number of people using the canteen may lead to overcrowding and longer waiting times for students during peak hours. Additionally, the public may have different preferences and dietary requirements compared to students, which could affect the menu options available and potentially increase costs.

In conclusion, the university should weigh the merits and demerits so that it can provide the best possible experience for both students and members of the public.

Artificial intelligence agents play ever more iniluential roles in our lives.[Q16]They do everything from suggesting new friends to recomimending purchases.[Q16]Theyre even beginning to drive our Cars,Another role that they are expected to take over is negotiating on our behalf in compercal transactions or legal disputes. So its important to know[Q17]whether using an artificial intelligence agent might affect how we negotiate.

Research indicates that it does.In a new study, participants were told to imagine that they were negotiating for something important to them, like a house.Next, they were told either that they would negotiate for themselves,or they would program an artificial intelligence agent to negotiate for them.Participants then completed a survey indicating how tough, deceptive and pleasant,or otherwise they wanted to be,or one of their agent to be in the negotiations. For example, participants could chodse tb be tough by making an opening demand far greater than what theyd be willing to accept.

They could also choose to express sympathy with their oppohent to appear pleasant, but they could also indicate that day or their agent would strategically express anger toward the opponent to gain advantage,or they coulc opt to convey dissatisfaction with the encounter,so that the other party would think they were losing interest. These are both examples of deceptive strategies.[Q18]Participants were more willing to employ deceptive strategies when assigned an agent to negotiate on their behalf.

Questions 16.What does the passage say about artificial intelligence agents?

Question 17 What does the new study want to find out about using an artificial intelligence agent?

What caused these improvements?Researchers have previously found a link between eating more fruits and vegetables and improved longer-term mental health. This would imply that the participants in the cucrent study may have felt better due to improved diet. However, the study showed participantsmental health improved even if the reported diets did not change after completing the program.

Also, the mental health benefits [Q20]were equal among participants who were overweight or obese and those in a healthy weight range. This suggests a link between cooking confidence and satisfaction around cooking and mental health benefits.

Who benefits most from learning to cook?Gender plays a part at the start of the program.77%of female participants were confident about cooking while just 23%of males were confident. At the end of the program.[Q21]Cooking confidence and skills were equal across both counterparts. This changing confidence could lead to a gender balance in home cooking. This,in turn, could reduce consumptioh of unhealthy, high -calorie processed meals.

Question 19:What do we learn about the benefits the participants gained from the healthy cooking course?

Question 20:What do the new research findings suggest about mental health benefits?

Question 21:What plays a role in determining who benefits most from learning to cook?

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage

Among all the animals, the ape is most like human beings. Both people and apes have the similar brain structure, the similar nerve system, and the similar kind of blood.

There are four kinds of apes: the chimpanzee(黑猩猩), the orangutan(猩猩), the gorilla(大猩猩), and the gibbon(長臂猿). They live in the deep forests and warm tropical regions of Africa and of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia.

All apes are covered with brown, reddish-brown, or black hair everywhere on their bodies except their faces, feet, and hands. Their hands each have four fingers and a thumb that helps them grip things the way our thumbs help us. But they also have a thumb on each foot instead of a big toe. Thus they can hold things with their feet also. Having short, weak legs, apes do not walk on the ground very much. However, their arms are very strong. This enables them to swing from branches and travel very quickly from tree to tree.

These animals live in small family groups that move from place to place in search of vegetables and fruits. They also eat eggs, small animals, nuts, and insects. When they are tired, they build nests in the trees. But they rarely sleep there for more than a night or two. Then they move on to look for more food.

There are some differences among the following three kids of apes. The gibbon is never more than three feet high and weight only about fourteen pounds. The gorilla grows to be six feet tall and weight up to 600 pounds. The orangutan is smaller than the gorilla. It stands three to five feet tall and weight up to 200 pounds.

Chimpanzees are the smartest of all apes. They can be taught to sit at a table and eat, to dress themselves, and to do things that human children can do.

The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health.Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat ,it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is nto a new discovery. In 1945, about 35 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additivies, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this ,penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cow. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue. 1.What is the best possible title of the passage?

As the pace of life continues to increase ,we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body. Stress is an natural part of everyday lift and there is no way to avoid it. In fact ,it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be .A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation adn give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. The dancers stand motionless at their position and the room grows silent. But as the music starts, they began to move, bending, turning and waving their fans gracefully as they perform. a traditional Japanese dance. Yoshihiro Kuroki watches in silence, occasionally making notes. But as the dance ends, he beams with happiness. The performance has been flawless.

There have been many performances of traditional Japanese dances over the centuries, but this one is unique, because it is performed not by human dancers but by robots. And the performance takes place not in a dance studio but in a laboratory of Sony Corp.s Entertainment Robot Co. in Shinagawa, Japan, where Kuroki isgeneral manager. He is the mastermind behind a series of even more capable humanoid entertainment robots, starting with the Sony Dream Robot, or SDR, in 1997, up to the current QRIO in 2003.

These delightful machines are only 58 cm tall, about the size of a newborn infant, weigh about 7 kg, and move with 38 degrees of freedom, each with its own servomotor(輔助馬達).

QRIOs predecessor, the SDR4X, announced in 2002, can walk, dance, sing, speak, recognize faces, and understand continuous speech. Each robot has two charge-coupled-device cameras to detect color and position andcan locate a colored ball, move toward it, and kick it into a goal. It also has contact sensors in severaljoints to avoid pinching real human fingers. Seeing the robot perform, it is difficult to remember that there is no sentience(知覺)behind those glass eyes.

選項C符合第2段最后一句“He is the mastermind behind a series of... robots...”。

該句中“two…cameras to...”

        Salmon

Every year, millions of salmon swim from the ocean into the mouths of rivers and then steadily up the rivers. Passing through waters, around rocks and waterfalls, the fish finally reach their original streams or lakes. They dig out nests in the riverbed and lay their eggs. Then, exhausted by their journey, the parent salmon die. They have finished the task that nature has given them. Months, or years later, the young fish start their trip to the ocean. They live in the salt water from 2-7 years, until they, too are ready to swim back to reproduce. Their life cycle helps man provide himself with a basic food-fish. When the adult salmon gather at the river mouths for the annual trip up the rivers, they are in the best possible condition, and nearly every harbor has its salmon fishing fleet ready to catch thousands for markets.

There are two factors which determine an individuals intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an individual is handicapped envionmentally ,it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individuals intellingence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old , their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was reated by parents of low intelligence in an isolatedcommunity with poor educational pooprtunities.Mark was reared inthe home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child , sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This enviromental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were giben tesets to measure their intelligence. Marks I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities , the twins , having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.

Text 4 I remember the way the light touched her hair. She turned her head, and our eyes met, a momentary awareness in that raucous fifth grade classroom. I felt as though I’d been struck a blow under the heart. Thus began my first love affair. Her name was Rachel, and I mooned my way through the grade and high school, stricken at the mere sight of her, tongue-tied in her presence. Does anyone, anymore, linger in the shadows of evening, drawn by the pale light of a window—her window—like some hapless summer insect? That delirious swooning, asexual but urgent and obsessive, that made me awkward and my voice crack, is like some impossible dream now. I would catch sight of her, walking down an aisle of trees to or from school, and I’d become paralyzed.

She always seemed so poised, so self-possessed. At home, I’d relive each encounter, writhing at the thought of my inadequacies. We eventually got acquainted and socialized as we entered our adolescence, she knew I had a case on her, and I sensed her affectionate tolerance for me. "Going steady" implied a maturity we still lacked. Her Orthodox Jewish upbringing and my own Catholic scruples imposed an inhibited grace that made even kissing a distant prospect, however fervently desired. I managed to hold her once at a dance—chaperoned, of course. Our embrace made her giggle, a sound so trusting that I hated myself for what I’d been thinking. At any rate, my love for Rachel remained unrequited. We graduated from high school, she went on to college, and I joined the Army.

When World War II engulfed us, I was sent overseas. For a time we corresponded, and her letters were the highlight of those grinding endless years. Once she sent me a snapshot of herself in a bathing suit, which drove me to the wildest of fantasies. I mentioned the possibility of marriage in my nest letter, and almost immediately her replies became less frequent, less personal. Her Dear John letter finally caught up with me while I was awaiting discharge. She gently explained the impossibility of a marriage between us. Looking back on it, I must have recovered rather quickly, although for the first few months I believed I didn’t want to live. Like Rachel, I found someone else, whom I learned to love with a deep and permanent commitment that has lasted to this day.
